Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: NW/W Wind Stength: 5/18kts Surf / Sea State: Flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Cloudy / sunny Max Speed: 15.5 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 14.3 Nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
After Thursday’s cracking session, I was looking forward to more of the
same, especially with a stronger forecast on the cards. This time I arrived
early for the usual kit?chat and debate. The wind on the field didn’t
match the forecast at all — much lighter and very gusty. The field was
busy again, mostly wingers, a handful of windfoilers, and I didn’t spot
any fins. Wingers were mostly on 5/6m, windfoilers on 6/7+, and DC out
there again on the 9.5 raceboard.
I used AI for setup again, but with the promised 25 knots nowhere to be
seen, I stuck with Thursday’s 20?knot settings. AI had suggested
switching from the 1300 front wing to the 1100 for the stronger forecast,
but everything else was similar — 6.6 sail, same fuse, same spacers. Left
to my own devices, I’d have rigged 8.2 with the 1300/330 foils.
On the water, a few decent gusts came through and I had some good runs, but
the long lulls and 90?degree wind shifts made the session stop?start. I
enjoyed using the lighter 6.6, but I was knackered holding the rig for ages
without hooking in. If I’d rigged the 8.2, I’d have been flattened in
the gusts and still stuck in the lulls — so another lesson learned.
AI’s general rule of “smaller sail, bigger wing” is proving more
reliable than my old-school “big sail, smaller wing” approach.
The 6.6 is so light that lugging an 8.2 around would have been pointless
anyway.
Wingers dominated again — they barely came off foil except during full
wind shutdowns. A couple of them caught a sweet window as the wind picked
up near the 3:30 high tide, but I was already cooked by then. My highlight
of the day was going straight through the front door trying to avoid James
filming — nearly crashed into him as a swinging gust hit, and he’s got
the evidence on video. Typical Bradfield moment.
Overall, an OK session. Next time I’m on the water, I’ll be winging —
still haven’t bothered since my two lessons last year, so it’s about
time.
Sadly my GW - 60 Lycosy watch gave up the ghost, so its watch app from now
on.
